Raymond Mertz has had an entrepreneurial mindset since he signed up for a single paper route of 89 customers at the age of 8. Little by little he took on more responsibility, and by the time he graduated high school, his route was serving more than 1,600 happy customers. In college, Raymond’s passions led him to pursue a degree in music. After graduation, he pursued and then received his journeyman electrician card.
But life took an unexpected turn for Raymond in 2012 when he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and a rare form of leukemia. After all of the traditional treatments failed him, Raymond started treating himself with cannabis, particularly sativas, to alleviate the pain and attempt to wean himself off the multitude of pills he was prescribed to alleviate his symptoms. His continued research while fighting for his life led him to discover RSO, or Rick Simpson Oil. Raymond took a chance on RSO, and it was the best decision of his life.
Eight years later, Raymond is still here. With use of RSO, he was been able to eliminate more than 40 daily medications while expanding his knowledge of cannabis and how to properly use it. He wants to share this knowledge about cannabis products with so many other people.
Today Raymond is passionate about helping people, especially veterans. He spends his time educating people on the medicinal effects of CBD and THC so they too can find relief from their ailments. His goal is to reduce the stigma around marijuana. He knows from experience that cannabis is effective when used correctly and life-changing for people who are suffering.
With the help of family and friends, Raymond opened Bay Area Meds or BAM. To serve those who are interested in cannabis as a safer alternative to pharmaceuticals. Bay Area Meds is a comfortable place where clients can ask questions and learn about the many benefits of cannabis. “When I moved to Kawkawlin, I went to the Twp and asked if they knew of anyone interested in leasing or selling a building for my electrical company, Electric Rays. When I was there I overheard some talk of a “provisioning center” license being available. I felt as though I was looking for something to give to the community and a higher calling had called me to open Bay Area Meds. I know it works! If it helped me, it can help others!”
Ashley Jackson is a cannabis enthusiast but her story changed directions after witnessing a horrific accident. The accident left Ashley looking for ways to deal with the PTSD she suffered, specifically anxiety and the inability to sleep. Although she’d been a recreational cannabis user in the past, she began to research and understand the differences between sativas and indicas and their effects on the mind and body. She found long-term relief from PTSD through the use of edibles.
Now her goal is full-spectrum. Ashley finds great satisfaction in helping others with similar situations and stresses. She believes it is important for her clients to understand they are not alone.
Together, Ashley and Raymond are unstoppable in their pursuit to give back to their community and help others in need.
